Personal Bankruptcies soar as company insolvencies plummet

The number of individuals going bankrupt has risen by almost a third in the past year, according to figures released by the DTI on 6 February. More than 10,000 people were affected in the final quarter of 2003; 29 per cent up on the corresponding period the previous year and the highest figure since the first quarter of 1993. In contrast, small firms specialising in company insolvencies face quieter times after the number of company failures for the same period stood at 3,316, a figure 22.5 per cent lower than for the last quarter of 2002.
